Page 8 Drug side effects There are numerous drugs which were put onto the market in recent decades after thorough animal safety-tests but which had to be withdrawn subsequently, since they caused unforeseen damage to human patients. Dr. Vernon Coleman has listed around 83 drugs withdrawn from European markets between 1961 and 1993. What is remarkable is that the health authorities cannot even agree which drugs are sufficiently dangerous to be withdrawn, for the same drug that is banned in one country will be allowed in another. Most of us have heard of the tragic plight of ex-Superman actor, Christopher Reeve, who fell off his horse and damaged his spine, losing the ability to walk. In 1995 the doctors at the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute, where Christopher Reeve was undergoing therapy, gave him an ‘experimental’ drug, ‘Cygen’ (first safety-tested on animals, of course) which had the highly therapeutic effect of — stopping the actor’s heart. There followed a desperate race against time as the specialists, fearing brain damage and worse, tried to restore Reeve to life. Fortunately, they managed to get the actor’s heart going again just in time — but it was a close calL *Alas Reeves is now deceased, what consolation are the words of the vivisectors now? How many thousands more ..no millions will also go to their graves with the false promises of the vivisection brigade ringing in their families ears. In the mid-1990s two teenagers died and 20 others suffered serious health problems, including severe arthritis and hepatitis, leading to a liver transplant, because of an antibiotic, ‘minocycline’, prescribed to treat common acne! (The Sun, 19.1.96.). In 1987, 62 preparations containing metamizol (a pain-killer) were withdrawn as, in addition to killing the pain, they also killed some of the patients... In Britain alone today there are half a million people whose hearing has been damaged by animal-tested drugs, including antibiotics (leaflet issued by the Hearing Research Trust entitled, Can You Help Us Defeat Deafness, 1996).
