Page 4Doctors Wake Up About Animal Experiments New Survey Among Doctors Suggests Shift in Attitude Regarding Scientific Worth of Animal Testing Patient advocacy group Europeans For Medical Progress commissioned pollsters Taylor Nelson to conduct a survey of 500 General Practitioners asking their opinion on animal testing and its relevance to their practice of treating human diseases. The poll, conducted in August of 2004, revealed a significant change in attitude on the part of practicing physicians toward the traditional medical community's reliance and trust in the efficacy of animal testing. Of the general practitioners polled: ¨ 82% were concerned that animal data can be misleading when applied to humans. ¨ 51% would have more confidence in human-based safety tests for new drugs than in animal safety tests. ¨ 83% would support an independent scientific evaluation of the clinical relevance of animal experimentation. From Europeans for Medical Progress web site
This is not the first poll carried out were doctors voiced their concern about animal experiments. Dr. Vernon Coleman also carried out a poll of 500 GP’s in conjunction with The Sun newspaper in the 1990’s. This also showed that GP’s questioned the validity of animal experiments, yet no government has ever carried out an investigation since the times of Queen Victoria.
In a television debate in which Dr. Coleman debated against the then Imperial Cancer Campaign, 84% of the public voted against animal testing. The government wants to protect pharmaceutical industries not the public. It would be against their political and financial interests as many MP’s have shares and are directors or consultants to the pharmaceutical industries. They also do not want to upset big business which donates millions to the major parties. Doctors SpeakI was conned by the establishment belief that without them (animal experiments) medical progress would be slow or non-existent. But what if they are not essential? What if they are actually harmful to people as well as to animals,….. differences between species make it impossible to extrapolate results from one species to another. Hence claims that veterinary medicine benefits from animal experiments are given the lie………. vivisectors themselves realise the uselessness of their own research……….. as a practicing doctor, I disregard totally their dangerously misleading ‘results’. Dr Peter Simmons, M.B., B.S..
The public trust doctors. But the public has been betrayed. Doctors trust drug companies. But that trust has been betrayed………... The greed of the pharmaceutical industry and the greed of an unquestioning and easily bought medical profession have allowed those who test new drugs to pass off animal experiments as a valuable aid. The truth is that even after doing animal experiments we still have to do tests on people but the animal experiments enable drug companies to get away with fewer tests and in the consequence the use of animal experiments is directly responsible for the size of the iatrogenesis problem (doctor induced illness). Dr. Vernon Coleman, from ‘Betrayal of Trust’ 1994 “We were finding, through scientific research, that extrapolating data from animals to humans is either misleading, unnecessary, dangerous, or all three…….. There were heavy risks , sometimes resulting in human illness and even death.. We had been led to believe that the majority of medical advances had come about as the result of research carried out on animals. Now we wondered was this truth or propaganda?
